REFERENDUM

WORD: REFERENDUM

MEANING:
1.
a. The submission of a proposed public measure or actual statute to a direct popular vote.
b. Such a vote.
2. A note from a diplomat to the diplomat's government requesting instructions.
3. A general vote by the electorate on a single political question which has been referred  to them for a  direct decision.

EXAMPLE/USAGE:
1. He called for a referendum on the death penalty.
